Wakayama Foreign Residents Support Mail【Vol.69】

Starting in 2026, it is planned that fines will be imposed in Japan for traffic violations by bicyclists who are 16 years of age and older.
The amount of the penalty fines is expected to range from 5,000 yen to 12,000 yen.

The following 9 violations will be prioritized for policing.
- Disregarding traffic signals
- Failing to stop at stop signs
- Violation of traffic distribution rules, such as riding on the right side of the road
- Riding through an area where bicycles are not allowed
- Entering a railroad crossing when the gate is closed
- Not slowing down when allowed to ride on a sidewalk
- Riding a bicycle without functioning brakes
- Riding while using a mobile phone
- Violating the rules and regulations set by the Public Safety Commission of the prefecture, such as riding while holding an umbrella or wearing earphones

A bicycle is classified as a type of vehicle (light vehicle) under the Road Traffic Law.
When riding a bicycle, please follow the traffic rules just as you do when driving a car.
