Wakayama Foreign Residents Support Mail【Vol.53】
◆Do you know what happens when an earthquake occurs?
The followings can happen.
(1) Buildings and houses may collapse due to an earthquake, and people may be trapped under the crumbling buildings alive. Also, outside walls and windows may break, and people may be injured by falling pieces of those.
(2) Telephone and Internet connections will be difficult to make because all people affected by the disaster may call/use at once. Also, connections will not be available if communication facilities are damaged.
(3) Buildings will collapse and people walking and driving cars to evacuate will concentrate on the roads. Roads will be congested. It will be difficult to evacuate if heavy traffic jams occur. In some areas, roads may also become blocked due to landslides, etc.
(4) Trains may stop. If the track collapses, the trains will not run. Also, even if the tracks does not collapse, it will take a considerable amount of time to make sure that the trains can run safely.
(5) Electricity will be cut off. Gas will be cut off. Water may not run. When a disaster strikes, it takes time to restore lifelines for daily life. Please read the below "BOSAI GUIDE" published by the Wakayama International Center to prepare for emergencies.
