◆ Shaking and seismic intensity
In Japan, the degree of shaking caused by an earthquake at a certain point on the ground is represented by a seismic intensity scale. There are 10 levels of seismic intensity: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-, 5+, 6-, 6+ and 7. Japan Meteorological Agency measures it with their seismic intensity meters.
On the other hand, the seismic magnitude scales, commonly used in the world, represent the size of an earthquake itself. For example, even if an earthquake scored a large magnitude (size of the earthquake), the seismic intensity (ground shaking caused by the earthquake) can be low if the location is far from the epicenter.
Japan Meteorological Agency explains seismic intensity and shaking conditions in multiple languages (Japanese, English, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, etc.). As Wakayama Prefecture is prone to earthquakes, please learn about the seismic intensity and prepare for possible earthquakes.
